5 Ways to Make Lines Under the Eyes Less Visible

Developing lines under the eyes is a natural reality of aging – but not one that is beyond a measure of control. See how you can return your youthful glow now.

Did you know that wrinkles and fine lines can start popping up when you’re still in your twenties? That’s right, if you think that you’re too young to take care of your skin, you’re wrong.

Whether you’re in your twenties or beyond, it’s likely that you’ve already put some thought into how to handle lines under the eyes. They’re natural signs of aging (and smiling and not getting enough sleep), but you don’t just have to live with them.

We’re here with a few ways that you can combat those fine lines with skincare and aesthetic procedures. Read on to learn more.

1. Prioritize Moisturization

By the time you’re in your mid-twenties, you should already have a solid before-bed skincare routine. While you may not feel the need for a thick eye mask, you should at the very least be using a rich moisturizer before bed.

The skin under your eyes is very thin and delicate. It dries out and gets damaged more quickly than the rest of the skin on your face. You need to pamper it if you want to prevent and soften under eye lines.

You don’t have to break the bank to do this, so find moisturizers that fit into your budget. Even layering several moisturizers and oils that you can get from the drug store will help.

If you’re not using a traditional eye cream, consider a sleeping mask or sleeping pack. These are popular in Korean skincare, and you can find them at many beauty supply shops.

You could also layer oils or ointments over your standard moisturizer to trap moisture. Be careful to avoid your eyes and eyelashes when you do this.

When you use an oil or thick ointment (such as Aquaphor) over your moisturizer, this is referred to as “slugging.” It keeps your skin soft and moisturized all night long by trapping moisture and letting your skincare products get to work.

2. Use Retinol or Retinoids

Retinoids are game changers when it comes to diminishing the appearance of fine lines under the eyes. Retinoids and retinol can be abrasive, so make sure that you don’t get any in your eyes or on your eyelashes.

Retinol is a derivative of vitamin A. It encourages collagen production, which in turn prevents and sometimes reverses fine lines and wrinkles.

You can invest in a nice moisturizer that contains retinol or retinoids, but if you’re committed, you can also get a prescription from a dermatologist. Prescription-strength retinol is intense, so your dermatologist may not recommend it around the eyes.

If you’re using retinol, it becomes more important for you to also wear sunscreen during the day. Retinol may make your skin more sensitive to sunlight (and photoaging, which will make the fine lines worse).

3. Consider Botox Injections

Botox is more popular than ever. While many people think that Botox injections are only for the rich and famous, this is no longer the case. You likely walk past people every day who have had Botox injections!

Botox seems scary, but it’s minimally invasive, and it starts working right away. It uses a toxin to freeze your muscles and nerve tissue to prevent future wrinkles and soften current ones.

The benefits of Botox can last for several months, and many people are so happy with the results that they get Botox injections several times per year.

While Botox is a toxin, Botox injections are still considered safe. Talk to your clinician about potential risks and how to minimize them if you’re concerned.

4. Get Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are another great solution for the lines that come alongside eye aging.

Fillers have a bad reputation, but it’s for no good reason! Well-done fillers are unnoticeable beyond their fine line-filling effects. They won’t look unnatural; you’ll just look like the best version of yourself.

Most dermal fillers are made with hyaluronic acid. Your body naturally produces hyaluronic acid, so you’re not introducing anything new or dangerous to your system. Many people think that fillers contain plastic or silicone, but this isn’t the case.

Hyaluronic acid is good at retaining water. It keeps your under eyes looking bright and plump. It also helps with wound healing, and it makes skin more flexible (both of which are helpful when it comes to filling in fine lines and wrinkles).

Bonus tip: you can also get skincare products with hyaluronic acid! They’re relatively affordable, and you apply the acid before your favorite moisturizers. Despite the name, hyaluronic acid won’t burn your skin, but it will yield good (albeit subtle) results that you can maintain long term.

Dermal fillers with hyaluronic acid can last for up to eight months, making them a fantastic solution.

5. Try Platelet-Rich Plasma Therapy

This is one solution that many people don’t know about! Platelet-rich plasma therapy, otherwise known as PRP, can help diminish the appearance of fine lines under your eyes.

Platelet-rich plasma is your body’s natural filler. It’s full of stem cells, and it can help your body build up more collagen and regenerate tissue. This means that it can make quick work of those pesky lines under your eyes or any other skin aging symptoms.

After several sessions, you can expect the results to last for several years. You can get touch-ups once per year for long-lasting results.
